EdOpt Consultations
“My daughter used to cry every morning and feel sick to her stomach before going to school – she never wanted to go. We chose a drop-off learning center.”
— Mom of 10-year-old
Your child should not have to suffer anxiety, depression, boredom, bullying, or be exposed to values that your family doesn’t support. If you are not satisfied with your child’s school but don’t know what to do, schedule an Education Options consultation to help you figure out a path.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Jody Underwood, and I’m the founding president of Education Options. I am available to provide one-on-one Education Options consultations to help families figure out what education direction will suit them.
How can I help you?
- I have spent almost all of my life involved in education. I have a doctorate in Education. I retired in 2023 as a learning scientist, where I researched, designed, and produced software to help students learn. I worked for the Math Forum, Carnegie Mellon University, Vanderbilt University, NASA, and Education Testing Service (ETS; the people who bring you the SAT, NAEP, and other standardized tests). I can help in a variety of areas.
- I served on the Croydon NH School Board from 2010-2023, serving as chair much of the time; I’m a founding board member of the non-profit School District Governance Association (SDGA), whose mission is to help school board members discover their lawful powers. I can help you navigate the school system, if that’s what you need.
- I have been involved in bill review, focusing on the vast number of education bills proposed each year, for the NH Liberty Alliance and for the SDGA. I can help you understand the education laws that apply to your needs.
- Along with a small team, I began the process of starting a charter school in the Upper Valley area. We found that the law wouldn’t allow us to do the type of school we wanted. But we learned a lot about the process along the way. I can help you find or start a charter school.
- I worked with the founders to set up Micah Studios, a learning center in Newport NH, which started in September 2024. I can help you find or start a micro school.
- I teach classes to homeschool groups, including writing and publishing a book of poems and of short stories (coming this spring). I can help you with information about homeschooling and homeschool co-ops.
EdOpt’s Goals
EdOpt’s aim is to help families understand all their education options, from non-traditional (homeschooling, homeschool co-ops, microschools) to traditional (charter schools, private schools, tech centers, dual enrollment, learn everywhere). Our website lists the education providers options around the state that we know about (please let us know if we’re missing any!) so you can investigate the ones that you’re interested in.
