If you are a parent of a child in public school — did you know that schools can’t hide from you any information about your child?
On Monday, February 3 at 10am, the Senate Children and Family Law committee will have a public hearing for SB72, Parental Bill of Rights in Education. This will take place in Reps Hall in the State House.
This bill reaffirms
“that parents have a fundamental right and responsibility to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their minor children and that in order to meaningfully and effectively exercise this right, no educational institution may withhold information about a child, the child’s health, the child’s school environment, or the child’s in-school behavior from the child’s parent or parents absent a compelling government interest.”
I highlighted “reaffirms” because parents already have all these rights. It’s just that schools have been ignoring them.
What you can do:
- Testify in favor of this bill. You can show up and testify in person, especially if you have personal experience, and/or you can call or email the committee members.
- If you have experienced schools hiding things from you about your children and disrespecting your rights as a parent, you should take your kids out of school and find another solution. Talk to us at EdOpt. We can help.
